If Gomes was looking for a hand waving gesture to wave play on he would also have seen the referee whose hands were behind his back the whole time not bring a whistle to his mouth.

Gomes: "He did not gesture in any way to play on, like you would normally expect. When I put the ball down on the floor, he started gesturing with his shoulders. "He is supposed to use his hands. It was not clear to anyone. It was only when I saw Scholes shouting at Nani to shoot that I r...

Re: Unsporting Man Utd...
The linesman didn't put a flag up until well after the united players were making their way back to the centre circle and spud fans approached him. The referee kept his hands behind his back the whole time and neer looked like bringing the whistle to his mouth (all this was well demonstrated on MOTD...

Re: Unsporting Man Utd...
It's the referee's job to signal when there IS a free kick, not when there ISN'T :? Furthermore, the referee has every right to overrule a linesman. Like seriously dude, what the shiraz are you on about??? Its the referees job to make sure that when he calls advantage, the player with the ball is a...

Re: Unsporting Man Utd...
It's the referees job to TAKE CHARGE of the game and implement the rules of the game in a manner which represents the sporting manner of the game. In order to do so it is necessary to communicate with the players at all times, especially in situations like this one where obviously no-one had any id...

Re: Unsporting Man Utd...
I don't think so. The referee stipulated from where the free kick was to be taken and the Sunderland player stopped it and kicked a stationary ball from said spot, the free kick is as good as taken.Nice One Cyril wrote:This was definitely the referee's fault.
