SAASL Sunday Division 1 - Round 2 Write Up - Craig Laird

Post by Gabon »

Match of the Day
ELIZABETH Downs showed why they are favourites for the 2017 title with a comprehensive 3-0 win over Parafield Gardens at Bradman Oval.
Both sides came into the game looking for improvement from round 1 where the Downs scraped a 3-2 win over Southern Knights while Gardens scored late to earn a point against Elizabeth Vale.
The visitors took the lead on eight minutes when a Matt Watson cross found Scott Lindsay who headed home in style.
Brayden Gundlach almost doubled the lead on 16 minutes when his shot whizzed across the face of the goal and moments later striker Billy Allottie headed just wide.
Gardens had a strong wind at their back and should have been level on 41 minutes when a corner found Dan Roadley at the back post but his volley flew over the bar.
The maroons double their lead on 50 minutes when a fine build up finished with Watson who whipped in a cross for Billy Allottie to fire home.
The Downs were now in control and on 63 minutes the game was sealed when Allottie again found the net to the delight of the travelling Downs army.
Downs coach Alan Mottram was pleased with the win “The 1st half was a bit scrappy in tough conditions but I thought after the break we controlled the tempo and held the ball well.”

A MICHAEL Mullen hat trick has helped Brahma Lodge to a convincing 5-0 win over the newly promoted Para Hills East at Cockburn Green.
Last season’s Champions were looking to respond to an opening day defeat to Salisbury Florina and they wasted no time with Mullen firing home in the 2nd minute.
East had a glorious chance to level the scores soon after through a penalty but Lodge keeper Jimmy McKee saved the spot kick to the delight of the home fans.
Lewis Vallelonga made it 2-0 before the break after rounding the keeper and sliding the ball home.
After the break Brahma continued to dominate possession with Mullen firing home twice while Vallelonga rounded off the 5-0 result with his 2nd goal.
Lodge Coach Ryan Mogg “We had to respond today and to the boys credit that’s exactly what they did.”

INGLE Farm came from two goals down to gain a share of the points in a 2-2 draw with Salisbury Florina at Walkleys Park.
Florina, riding high after defeating Brahma Lodge in round 1, opened the scoring on 20 minutes through Kale Wicker and just after the hour mark Wicker was at it again to give the visitors a 2-0 lead.
Farm are always a hard team to beat at home and on 70 minutes Shane Winter bundled the ball home to set up a thrilling finish.
Farm pushed everything at Florina and when a Shane Pearce shot hit the post striker Matt Cocks was on hand to fire home the equalizer.
Florina coach Jeff McCormack “We’ve taken four points against quality opposition so we are really happy with our start.”

SALISBURY Inter and Elizabeth Vale maintain their unbeaten start to the season after a hard fought 1-1 draw at Underdown Park.
The visiting Vale opened the game well but went behind after a defensive error saw the ball finish in the back of the net.
On 70 minutes the Vale equalized when a glancing Mark Burbridge header sailed into the net.
Both sides pressed hard for a winner but both had to settle for a point.
Vale Coach Tim Crawford “We played well today but we need to be more clinical in front of goals.”
Steve Cook “I think a draw was a fair result.”

SOUTHERN Knights secured their first points of the season with a deserved 2-0 win over Modbury Vista at Southern Knights Ground.
Knights were looking to build on a fighting 2-3 loss to Elizabeth Downs and on 15 minutes they took a lead through the ever dangerous Tom Foglia.
On 65 minutes the points were sealed when Foglia rounded the keeper to make it 2-0.
