Re: League Cup Future?
Are they reserve players?? or more players not currently in the starting 11, out of form, returning from injury. Most of the top level clubs playing 3 games a week have 25+ man squads to cover the mounting fixture list. We made 10 changes to our team this week against Reading with our reserves playing the Mancs Monday night, the day before. Not 1 player played in both games. So I wouldn't call them reserves as the likes of Gabriel, Gibbs, Jenkinson, Elneny, Chamberlain, Lucas, Iwobi, Holding, Reine-Adelaide currently sit on the bench and are deemed squad players and if one of the current starting 11 gets injured they will come straight inozzie owl wrote:With EPL sides playing youth and reserves , is it worth continuing?

Re: League Cup Future?
EPL sides still seem to win it, so cant see why not (keep it). Lot of these "reserves" still play for their national team so cant be that bad

They've had their acadamies let into the FA Trophy or what ever that knock out competition for lower league sides is. I can't think of the name off the top of my head but I am sure our Millwall connection can.

But point of correct, Man U played a full strength team.

The crowds are still decent, the fans still want it, 5,000 Reading came to the Arsenal and the football hasn't suffered from having motivated squad players in, it's actually been pretty good.

The Checkatrade Trophy. What a joke decision that was, saw a lot of fans boycotting games.Vernon Howell wrote:They've had their acadamies let into the FA Trophy or what ever that knock out competition for lower league sides is. Re: League Cup Future?
The most obvious us answer to me is the return to the old European Cup Format. This will instantly make winning one of the cups important.
If we have to continue with 4 teams from England in the "chanpions" league then give the winner of the FA and League Cup a place. At least you could then make an argument that 3 of them are champions.
Failing that, big fines and sanctions on teams who are effectively match fixing. If you play a weakened side and lose, punish them. A weakened side could possibly be defined as more than 5 unforced changes from the previous league game.

Don't clubs have to have a squad of a designated size. If so the coach/manager should be allowed to pick any side out of that squad.

If he makes 6 unforced changes inside 3 days, I'd say it's pretty clear it's not the strongest team.Pooraka Sałt wrote:His best team is open to interpretation.
Re: League Cup Future?
There is squad restriction in the Premier League where clubs have to submit a squad of 25 players before the season (and can be amended during the transfer window). 8 Must be "Home grown" and an unlimited number of Under-21 players are allowed. This rule also applies to the League Cup.
If a club fields an eligible squad, then there is no issue with the current rules. However, Wolves were fined £25,000 for changing all 10 outfield players in 2010
Would a sanction apply if the changes are made and the team wins?

Re: League Cup Future?
Why not just give teams the option not to participate if its such a "hassle" of a comp? This should only be afforded to those who qualified for European comps.

No, Millwall made 11 changes for a league game in 1999 and won 2-0 so were not fined. If you make numerous changes, putting out a weakened team and lose it's akin to match fixing.pernunz wrote:There is squad restriction in the Premier League where clubs have to submit a squad of 25 players before the season (and can be amended during the transfer window). 8 Must be "Home grown" and an unlimited number of Under-21 players are allowed. Re: League Cup Future?
Because your "best team" is so subjective, I mean some of the "replacement" players for the bigger clubs would be walk up first teamers for other clubs, the only way around it would be to have clubs submit two-tiered squads, so that they have say, 16 first tier players and 9 second tier, then the FA could restrict how many of the tier 2 players could be used in certain circumstances. Can't see it happening though.God is an Englishman wrote:No, Millwall made 11 changes for a league game in 1999 and won 2-0 so were not fined. What would be wrong with saying no more than 5 "unforced" changes to your last team?Nice One Cyril wrote:Because your "best team" is so subjective, I mean some of the "replacement" players for the bigger clubs would be walk up first teamers for other clubs, the only way around it would be to have clubs submit two-tiered squads, so that they have say, 16 first tier players and 9 second tier, then the FA could restrict how many of the tier 2 players could be used in certain circumstances. Re: League Cup Future?
what denotes unforced? Loss of form and tactical considerations could be argued to require changes.

Well an injury or suspension would be a forced change. Being cabernet wouldn't be forced.Brian the Postman wrote:what denotes unforced? Loss of form and tactical considerations could be argued to require changes.

Re: League Cup Future?
Not very much to be honest. For a long time now the League Cup has lost a lot of appeal and more recently the FA Cup has lost much of its value also (particularly in relation to the bigger teams involved in Champions League games). It is all about a balancing act in relation to risk of injuries, suspensions, rotation of players etc. v importance of competition. May well indicate that Liverpool and Man. Utd have more quality in depth of squad compared to most but this should not be a surprise considering their fan base and financial clout. The League Cup is low priority for both clubs and if either club win the trophy it will be with weakened teams. Most would fancy a Liverpool v United final but two leg semis will add more interest and the chance of an upset. If they meet head on will be interesting to see how 'strong' or 'weak' the respective teams are as they are huge rivals. I'm sure Hull and Southampton will be doing their best to upset the apple-cart.Bomber wrote:What does it say about the rest when quite possibly, Liverpool and Man U could play in the final using mainly ressies most of the way?

Re: League Cup Future?
So the lower league clubs are fined when putting out weakened sides in the EFL Trophy but the big clubs can do what they want in the EFL Cup.
