Johnny Warren Cup - 2007

APIA deny Penrith Nepean the Cup
By Chris Dunkerley

NSW Pre-Season Johnny Warren Cup - Final
7:30pm, Saturday 17 February, 2007
at Marconi Stadium, Bossley Park

APIA Leichhardt Tigers 2
(Ian King 9', Christian Care 38')
defeated
Penrith Nepean United 0

Two first half goals were enough for APIA Leichhardt Tigers to take out the Cup named after the late great Johnny Warren. In the play-off for 3rd and 4th Blacktown City Demons, fielding a young side defeated Sydney United 3-1.

The Final of the Johnny Warren pitted one of the oldest clubs in the senior competition, APIA Leichhardt Tigers, with new boys on the block Penrith Nepean United on a fine February evening at the lush surrounds of the Marconi Stadium.

In the 3rd minute a timely tackle by PNU's Ryan O'Shea on Franco Parisi that deflected for a corner and heralded the backs to the wall defence of PNU throughout the half.

In the 9th minute APIA's ex English professional Ian King stunned the crowd with a 25m strike. Seeing PNU 'keeper Fernando Greco o tough off his line, swept a sweet shot over him and into the top right corner of the net. 1-0

PNU made a rare foray forward and in the 17th minute Daniel Wilson curled a great snap shot that went curled past the top corner of the post.

23 minutes in and Wilson slipped the ball to Boardman who was free in a dangerous spot but he was judged off-side, and at the other end Peter Peralta headed wide.

APIA looked more dangerous in attack and a lovely dummy by Erick Anabalon off a cross from the left should have a better resolution.

Although PNU was getting behind the APIA defence but they always had the numbers in time.

In the 36th minute APIA's Peter Peralta sent over a ball to Christian Care who beat the keeper and defender and slotted it into the net. 2-0

Two minutes later substitute Robert Younis shot from the left but it was covered and parried by Greco in the PNU goal.

After the break PNU put pressure on early and received a free kick well into APIA's half. From the kick APIAs keeper Nash failed to hold under pressure but it was at last 'cleared'. It fell to Brian Vanega who blasted over.

APIA continued to pressure but their shooting was wayward.

In the 72nd minute PNU sub David Harding's header almost beat Nash as he dived full stretch.

APIA sub Stephen Kayes made a good run down the right but shot straight at the keeper.

In extra time Michael Galluzzo pulled off a great tackle to save any chance for PNU to pull one back.

APIA ran out worthy winner 2-0

See Soccer NSW link for details of other game - Blacktown City Demons defeated Sydney United 3-1.
