Football Documentaries

Post by Kitchimo »

Are there any that people recommend?

I've watched Maradona by Kuruvica, which is excellent. Keen to see that Zidane 90 minutes one.

Zidane is ok. The idea behind it is a good one but imo doesn't translate well in film format.

Still enjoyed it though and the soundtrack is great by Mogwai.

other good docs that sbs showed back in the day:

eusebio - a player for all times --> GOLD

pele: dream of a boy (with subtitles)

maradona: greatest player in the world

i remember one world cup 1994 or 98?.... sbs showed all the WC films starting from 1962 i think? they were good also... i remember them saying the doco about 1978 WC being controversial as it was made by brazilians and their biased comments on how the argies won the cup... good value

got these docos somewhere on tape
"Thats not sexy football!" and "Play the REAL one... again and again"

World Football Rivalries and Football's Greatest airing on ESPN have both been fantastic.

Hopefully SBS show some good documentaries during the WC.

Once in a Lifetime, about the New York Cosmos, was pretty enjoyable. Had some good footage, but didn't discuss a lot of the players. Put a lot of focus into the Pele v Chinaglia rivalry.

Gazza's Tears is an essential watch for any England fan. A time when the players actually gave a shiraz.

There's a similar one about referees at Euro 2008 called 'Kill The Ref', which ends up focusing on Howard Webb after his grenache-up during the Austria-Poland game.

John Sitton's rant where he fires 2 players and offers to fight the rest of them is PURE GOLD! That rant is on you tube.

Yeah actually just found the whole documentary on you tube over 6 parts. Quite interesting. Sitton certainly wasn't a motivational speaker.

Kicking It - The story of the Homeless World Cup - Narrated by Colin Farrell.

Great Doco and really opens the eyes to see how football can change the lives of everyone.
