Greatest Ever SAASL player ever - Voting System
I happened to watch the video on the World Game web site that explained the voting system decided to choose the greatest Australian player ever, the greatest team and a few other categories.
http://theworldgame.sbs.com.au/video/22 ... footballer
Here is the actual site where you can go and vote for these categories.... http://www.greatesteveraustralianfootballer.com/
Anyway, there have been quite a few threads on here where forumites have expressed their opinions on who is the best SAASL player ever and it got me thinking.
Given that the Amateur League's 50th anniversary year is just around the corner, I'm wondering whether something like this could be added to the celebrations. From my understanding there is a planning committee within the League to look at what will be happening for the 50th year. Correct me if I'm wrong but I think Swanny is even helping the League work on a photo history of the competition as well.
Maybe a few interested forumites would like to approach the League's planning committee and discuss this idea of having a voting event. If something like this was done, it would be a great way to promote the history of the competition both amongst the local communities and in broader terms. It could be done in a similar system to the Johnny Warren Foundation where a group of pre-nominated panellists have 50% of the vote.
Just an idea.
I thought I'd post this suggestion as something to be considered.
Hope everyone has a great weekend being involved in our amateur league competition.

Great Idea however I believe it would be better to nominate a the Best SAASL Team Ever.
To nominate the Best Player Ever would be way too difficult.

Re: Greatest Ever SAASL player ever - Voting System
would be an infinite source of debate on the forum for years to come...lol
would it be players from div 1 only???
how biased would voters be towards players from their club ???
any thoughts?

Not many would actually remember, or have seen, players spanning the whole 50 years....PASC wrote:would be an infinite source of debate on the forum for years to come...lol

I know the early APAC were very dominant but have no idea how they might compare to today's players.

I agree.... too hard to pick just one Greatest Player. Be impossible to rate the players of 40 yrs ago against today's players-whom more would have seen.KING NUGGETT wrote:Great Idea however I believe it would be better to nominate a the Best SAASL Team Ever.

Whittle it down to, say, a dozen hall of famers. Picking a team often ends up with ten forwards!
Re: Greatest Ever SAASL player ever - Voting System
I remember playing against Milan Ivanovic when he was at Fulham...he'd be in there for sure
Re: Greatest Ever SAASL player ever - Voting System
Yeah, that's another problem... some great players made their name elsewhere, and finished their careers in SAASL. Would they still be eligible? What would the criteria be?Porky wrote:I remember playing against Milan Ivanovic when he was at Fulham...he'd be in there for sure

Re: Greatest Ever SAASL player ever - Voting System
It would be a very difficult exercise as you are only going on people's opinions, not like we have any video footage of the players from the early years.
Having been involved since the very early 70's, I can tell you all the players were a lot older then, as compared to now,had a lot of experience. You only have to look at State team photos from all those years ago.
A lot of the sides back then, featured some players who played at a very high level in their own country, before joining the saasl.
From the time I started just some of the players that come to mind, include Dave Hartley ( Apac, striker ) former Scottish professional, scored 5 goals in a saasl final, 3 of them direct from corners. Jock Coull ( Findon ) Bobby Smith ( West Beach ) off course Frankie Day ( Vale and Inter ) Glen Beresford ( Downs , Inter ) Andy Hutchings ( downs , Inter ) John Lovatt, Ferdi Pitt ( Parafield Gardens ) Alby Soang ( Findon ) won top G/S and player of year div 1 Sunday comp. John Huider and "Chalky" Koscis Hindmarsh Budapest, John Braiotta ( Western United, now known as Fulham Utd ) Lou Lodi (GK ) and Beppi Zanin ( Inter ) . My apologies to Austria and Apollo X1, whose players names I cant remember. This is just a few from the top of my head.
I look at the game now, there are some outstanding players, has changed so much ,the tactics, and the playing equipment.
You look at the technology of ball, boots, shirts ( back then would weigh a ton when it rained, sweat like crazy if it was warm )
Tactically , back then most teams played the 5 ( 2 wingers, 2 inside forwards,Centre forward ) - 3 (2 mid field + centre half ) -2 ( fullbacks )formation - what would happen if you tried that now.
I think it would unfair to all the good players from the past, and the current, many of whom are worthy, and to come up with just a team. As I mentioned earlier we dont have any footage of them, and you would only be going on someone's opinion, including mine.
Good Luck in your choices

I played in that era.... and can remember Sever, Gruber and Kauffman of Austria being outstanding players. But, like many back then, they made their names in the Federation originally.Caretaker Coach wrote:It would be a very difficult exercise as you are only going on people's opinions, not like we have any video footage of the players from the early years.

Also there was Rick Cockburn of West Beach; Ashton and Barr of Elizabeth Thistle; Bobby Hunter of Tailem Bend; Hofmeyer of Hectorville; Hartley was outstanding for Munno Para; Bobby Orr, and many others.
There were some great Apollo XI players, but I can't remember their names, either!
Re: Greatest Ever SAASL player ever - Voting System
One Saturday player that often gets overlooked was Matthew Vario...excellent goalscoring record !
I only saw him play once....but lots of votes and goals over many years.
Steve Papadopolous is another...
