Ched Evans jailed for five years for rape
Evans, 23, had denied raping the 19-year-old woman in a hotel room near Rhyl, North Wales, in the early hours of May 30 2011.
He was given the sentence after Caernarfon Crown court heard the woman had been too drunk to agree to sex, which the defendant claimed had been consensual.
Co-defendant Clayton McDonald, who plays for Port Vale, was found not guilty of the same charge.
McDonald had initially brought the woman back to the Premier Inn, having met her on a night out in Rhyl over the Bank Holiday weekend.
He admitted to sex with the woman, saying it was consensual.
Evans will be eligible for release on parole just over halfway into the sentence.
Proceedings were delayed when friends and family celebrated McDonald's acquittal, which was followed by the decision to find Evans guilty.
The victim said she woke up in a double bed, having had no recollection of going to the hotel or with whom, fearing her drinks had been spiked.
"My clothes were scattered around on the floor," she said. "I just didn't know how I got there, if I had gone there with anyone. I was confused and dazed."
The court heard that Evans, who lives in Yorkshire but whose mother lives in Rhyl, had invited several friends to the town for an evening on May 29.
He had booked a hotel room for his former Manchester City youth academy team-mate McDonald, saying it was because there was not enough room at his mother's house.
The prosecution said that the men had gone out the intention of procuring a woman for sex, and that the events were watched through a window by Evans's brother Ryan Roberts and a friend, Jack Higgins.
Witnesses, including hotel employees, told the court that the woman was struggling to stand up at various points during the evening.
McDonald had texted Evans after returning to the hotel, saying he had "got a bird". Evans told the court that he entered the room, watched the pair having sex before doing so himself.
Evans scored 35 goals for Sheffield United this season, and has been capped 13 times by Wales, scoring twice.

Dan Birdwell - You have to play this game like somebody just hit your mother with a two-by-four.

When the verdict was first given, the reports being printed were very sketchy. Lots of people were questioning how someone could be convicted of rape on what had been printed. I just meant that they obviously had enough evidence to convict him, they didn't just do it on a whim.Chade wrote:In what way?BowTiesAreCool wrote:Obviously a lot more to this than has been printed.

What I don't understand is how one of the guys is guilty and the other one isn't given that the case (as reported above) was it was non-consentual due to the woman not knowing what was going on.

Where does it say there were two men involved in the rape?

Thanks, missed that bit...
Bit strange then that McDonald wasn't charged also, but it does state ealier in the piece that he claimed the sex was consentual.
Maybe she passed out after and so couldn't consent to Evans.......although she says she doesn't even know how she got to the room, so how can she remember consenting to one and not the other? :? ...

That's my point. Also because she says 'she doesn't remember' does that mean that she may have consented at the time?redmum wrote:Blotto wrote:Evans told the court that he entered the room, watched the pair having sex before doing so himself.

Re: Ched Evans jailed for five years for rape
She may have been deemed to have consented with McDonald before they got back to the room. She did go home with him after all. She didnt go home with Evans. McDonald was charged and acquitted.
Re: Ched Evans jailed for five years for rape
This is my point earlier on. The reports leave it open to interpretation really, but they don't just choose to convict one and not the other for shits and giggles. They obviously had enough to go on.BlackBrian_7 wrote:That's my point. Also because she says 'she doesn't remember' does that mean that she may have consented at the time?redmum wrote:

The other aspect of this is that 5 years seems a bit soft for a crime such as rape.

Re: Ched Evans jailed for five years for rape
It certainly raises a lot of questions about when alcohol and sex are involved.
Is it therefore OK for a woman to go out, deliberately get picked up, get totally rat's arsed, go a hotel room with a group of guys and have sex with them all, regret it in the morning and then cry RAPE!?

I think the moral of the story there is : If she's so 'rat's arsed'.....don't take her back to your hotel room!
(But I agree, it does raise a lot of questions)
