The 2012 hummel F-League started with a Bang!

The 2012 Hummel F-League kicked off in Melbourne over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend and the Series-1 scorelines certainly set tongues wagging.
Vic Vipers and Dural Warriors have the early running after grabbing a trio of decisive victories at the YMCA Derrimut in Melbourne’s western suburbs, but all teams were highly competitive despite a couple of lopsided scorelines.

A healthy crowd also made for an exciting atmosphere as almost 400 people piled into the YMCA over the two days to catch a glimpse of all the action.

And excitement was the name of the game as a whopping 46 different players scored 85 great goals (just over seven a game), Dural duo Greg Giovenali and Nathan Niski snaring five apiece, followed by four-goal efforts from Warriors team-mates Michael Figueira and Jarrod Basger (all against Boomerangs) and Vipers ace Jonathan Barientos.

While it’s early days, the Victorian teams are split with undefeated St Albans Strikers rounding out the top-three and Melbourne Heart and Jaguars yet to open their account.

North of the border East Coast Heat are fourth following their win and draw, and Parramatta Blues and Boomerangs picked up a win each.

The 2012 Hummel F-League next moves to Sydney’s Morris Iemma Indoor Sports Centre for Series-2 match-ups (rounds 4-6) on June 23-24.

Round 1

Vipers strike at Jaguars

A home derby between Vic Vipers and Jaguars kickstarted this year’s Hummel F-League on Saturday morning with the 8-1 scoreline underlining the Vipers advantage in playing experience.

The crowd sat 3-4 deep on a crisp Saturday morning as both sides fought hard in the opening minutes, .Vipers poened the socring scoring Thiago Priori on the quarter-hour and a Jason Barientos strike put them 2-0 in front at the break after a tough, tight first half.

The Vipers got off to a blistering second term run and goals to Adam Cooper, Mirza Pedic and a double strike to Barientos and Priori in the 33rd minute pushed them out to a decisive 8-1 advantage before a late consolation goal from Barrigos for Jaguars wrapped up the scoring.

Warriors douse Heat

The second Saturday morning game was an absolute doozie between NSW sides Dural and newly formed East Coast Heat, the Warriors overturning a 2-3 halftime deficit to win 7-3.

East Coast blasted out of the blocks and a Chris Zeballos double and Nathan Niski own goal lifted Heat to a hard-fought but well-deserved 3-2 lead at the interval.

But it was all Dural in the second period as Greg Giovenali completed his hat-trick, Niski bobbed up for couple of goals for his own team, and Blake Rosier and Toby Seeto strikes rounded out an emphatic 7-3 victory.

Boomerangs burn Heart

The midday matinee was an exciting fixture as Boomerangs edged out Melbourne Heart 2-1 after the two sides were deadlocked 0-0 at halftime.

After a tight first term tussle produced no goals it took just three minutes following the restart for Lev Lewis to find an opening for Heart.

But Melbourne’s joy was shortlived as Boomerangs countered with swift replies from Glenn Smith and George Cattanach to take a 2-1 advantage with 13 minutes still to play.

The home side kept at it and only had themselves to blame when they missed an absolute sitter with 30 seconds to go that would’ve tied the game up, Boomerangs holding on for a debut win.

Strikers give Parramatta the blues

St Albans Strikers rolled Parramatta Blues 4-0 in the Saturday afternoon match.

A tight opening period saw St Albans take a one goal lead into halftime via Ivan Zilic’s fourth-minute strike, but a more dominant second half start lifted the Strikers to a four goal lead by the half-hour mark thanks to goals from Jusuf Avdic, Tomislav Grigic and Aljia Redzepovic.

Parramatta had no answers in stopping a first-up whitewash, St Albans winning comfortably 4-zip.

Round 2

Warriors bring down Jaguars

Dural Warriors romped home to a massive 10-1 win over Jaguars as round two games started on Saturday evening with a massacre.

Jaguars were actually quite competitive early on and only a fourth-minute Toby Seeto goal for the Warriors separated the two sides at halftime.

Dural gave themselves a three-goal buffer when Greg Giovenali and Michael Figueira both found the mark in the 27th minute before a Sanchul Lim goal for Jaguars kept the home side in the game with 10 minutes left.

But before you could bat an eyelid Giovenali scored again, and then so did Taka Iata, Wade Giovenali, Figueira (his second), Danny Martinez and Nathan Niski (2) as the Warriors strutted off court 10-1 winners.

The manner of victory raised eyebrows in opposition F-League camps, especially as Dural found a way to score three goals in the last 90 seconds of the game.

Vipers stop Boomerangs

An injury-savaged Boomerangs fell 4-1 to Vic Vipers on Saturday night in a valiant display from the ACT side.

The visitors led 1-0 early thanks to a Sam Smith goal but Vipers player Adam Cooper drew them level within a minute before a Jonathan Barientos strike five minutes later lifted the Vics 2-1 in front midway through the half.

The Boomerangs efforts were tempered by a serious injury to George Cattanach (possible Achilles) and further goals to Jason Barientos and Ricardo Castro proved too much for the ACT side to chase down, Vipers winning 4-1.

Strikers, Heat in stalemate

St Albans Strikers and East Coast Heat played out a thrilling 2-2 draw as round two games resumed on Sunday morning.

East Coast scored the opener but the lead was shortlived as 10 seconds after the restart St Albans equalised.

Futsalroos goalkeeper Peter Spathis then earned himself a yellow card for bringing down a Strikers attacker and the resulting penalty gave the home side a 2-1 halftime lead.

But it was all Heat in the second half as the NSW-side leveled up the scores to play out the weekend’s only draw.

Heart sing the Blues

Parramatta Blues picked up its first win of the weekend after defeating Melbourne Heart 6-0 in a fiery affair on Sunday morning.

Goals to Goran Ljuboja and Alan Kovacevic kicked Parramatta into gear as they led 2-0 at the interval.

It was fireworks in the second period as both sides committed five fouls each, the Blues making the most of the situation with goals to captain Gavin Schipp and Tuan Cao doubling their advantage by the half-hour mark.

Melbourne tried to find a way back into the game by playing fifth man for the final six minutes of the game only for a Jordan Guerreiro and second Cao goal in the dying moments to finish off a convincing six-goal whitewash.

Round 3

Dural down Boomerangs

A clinical second half performance from Dural Warriors elevated them to a fine 8-3 win over Boomerangs on Sunday afternoon.

The Warriors led 4-2 at halftime and hit the second half afterburners as Jarrod Basger bagged four goals and Michael Figueira a brace to help Dural complete a hat-trick of wins in Series-1 and take the competition lead on goal difference over Vic Vipers.

Heat cook Jaguars

East Coast Heat turned up the interstate fire with a 5-1 win against Jaguars on Sunday afternoon.

Andre Caro got the ball rolling for East Coast in just the third minute and a 10th-minute Adam Husseini follow-up gave the Heat a 2-0 buffer at halftime.

The visitors kept up their pressure in the second half and Joao Da Silva extended the lead five minutes after the restart before a Chris Hanly double made it 5-0, Sangchul Lim netting a consolation goal for the Victorians.

Vipers beat Parramatta

Vic Vipers wrapped up its third successive victory following a solid 5-2 victory over Parramatta Blues on Sunday afternoon.

It was nice and close at the start of the match before Jonathan Barientos struck either side of a Fernando de Moraes goal to make it 3-0 for Vipers at halftime.

Adam Cooper pushed the advantage to 4-0 straight after the break but a Slavan Ljubljana double for Parramatta halved the deficit and made for an exciting last five minutes of the game with the Blues trailing 4-2.

However, Barientos finished off his hat-trick in the last few minutes to complete a sound 5-2 win.

Strikers eclipse Heart

St Albans Strikers edged Melbourne Heart in a 5-3 derby thriller on Sunday evening to remain unbeaten in the 2012 F-League.

St Albans certainly looked the goods when goals to Jose Portillo, Maxim Avram, Aljia Redzepovic and Jusuf Advic underpinned a dominant 4-0 halftime lead, and Irzad Spijodic pushed them even further in front in the 27th minute.

But a Heart feeding frenzy saw Anthony Ramzy score twice and Muhammed Tankir bag another inside three minutes of each other as Melbourne clawed their way back to two goals down with seven minutes still to play.

But the miracle comeback wasn’t to be as the Strikers held on for a 5-3 win to sit just behind unbeaten Dural and Vic Vipers on the competition ladder.
