Rain Affected Pitches

Post by PDog »

Firstly, i love this weather for football, no dramas there.

Just wondering, will there be games called off this week due to rain effected pitches?

Which grounds are notorious for this, and which are the better ones in these conditions?

Cheers!!

Adelaide Uni are notorious for this. Hopefully a days rest and (some!) care will ave it right for tomorrow.

Gardens could be a bit of a worry, especially if we get much more rain. The last time we had a few days of constant rain there was an inch or two of water actually sitting over the ground, someting that many of us had never seen.

At the time I asked whether the water table levels below the ground may have been artifically raised (by the newly installed rain water recyling system installed next to the oval which pumps water back into the aquifer) to a point that mean't the rain actually falling on the oval had no where to drain.

Lets hope there is no issue. After the huge effort Lefty and the rest of the committee have put into making the day a big occassion it would be a shame for it to be ruined.

Come on you Gardens.

From memory - they were always pretty good pitches in the ordinary conditions. I live out that way and drive past fairly often, will try to pop down and have a look this arvo.

Wouldn't all the water at Ingle Farm ground drain off in the South-Western corner ?

I remember going up to Torrens Valley last season and they had several large patches of water just sitting on top of the pitch. From memory we only played for about 40 minutes

Yes Torrens Valley's pitch is notorious for being under water when we have this much rain. Lucky we are away this weekend. The south-western corner would resemble a swimming pool at the moment.

Terrible, might have to use one of the other pitches on site as ours has:

(a) a couple of rivers in it and;
(b) marquee tents still up from a hockey comp last week

Yes, there are a few pitches there. Don't know which one USC Lion uses though?

For any Flinders types on here coming to play the 4's, the first two pics show where we usually play. Will be a messy affair

Yeah, there is, but the one i was referring to was the one literally against the road on Trimmer Pde.

When i have played USC in the past, they used the one closest to the club rooms, but that was a while ago.

No ours is the one next to it thats just on trimmer parade.

I'm not sure of the condition of the corner pitch as the lights weren't on it last night.....

Just had a quick look out at Grange on the way home.

The main pitch, where the USC Lion banners are in front of the club rooms, looks as though it is in pretty good condition considering the weather. No mud patches, lakes, rivers etc, just a greasy surface from the rain. I'd see no reason to call off any matches on that pitch unless there's copious amounts of rain in the next 24 hours.

The pitch closest to the corner of Trimmer Pde and Military Rd is in good nick too, but the other pitch down the back off Trimmer Pde is terrible. Hacked up, mini lakes, big mud patches etc.

If it keeps raining and the Saturdays teams play, it might not be in a state to play for Pontians and Vale. Maybe a Friday night catch up match for them?

I saw a SAAFL Div 2 Grand Final played at that Uni Ground it had more water on it that those pictures on the opposite side of the ground to the grandstand it was absolutley insane just saw water splashing everwhere could pick the ball of players for water....

You Too your Absolutley correct Bradman Rd use to handle the rain it use to drain perfectly, but ever since the world first wetland program & pumping that wetland water back in the aquifer the ground holds water & doesn't drain.
If it doesn't let up soon I'm thinking it going to be touch & go Sunday...

Looks like we'll prob use the corner one tomorrow as I believe Monarchs are playing away....
