Suarez - Gimme 10!
Luis Suarez 10-game ban: FA punishes Liverpool striker for bite
Liverpool striker Luis Suarez has been banned for 10 games by the Football Association for biting Chelsea's Branislav Ivanovic.
The incident happened during Sunday's 2-2 draw between the sides.
Following the bite, the 26-year-old apologised for biting the Chelsea defender and spoke to Ivanovic personally to say sorry.
Liverool, who have already fined the Uruguay international, have until Friday at 12:00 BST to appeal.
An FA statement read: "A three-person Independent Regulatory Commission today upheld The FA's claim that a suspension of three matches was clearly insufficient and the player will serve a further seven first-team matches in addition to the standard three. The suspension begins with immediate effect.
"The Liverpool forward had accepted a charge of violent conduct but had denied The FA's claim that the standard three-match sanction was insufficient for the offence.
"The incident was not seen by the match officials and has therefore been retrospectively reviewed.
"Suarez has until midday on Friday, 26 April to appeal the additional suspension, above the standard three matches."
The ban covers their final four games of this season, and the first six games of 2013-14.
LFC managing director Ian Ayre said: "Both the club and player are shocked and disappointed at the severity of today's Independent Regulatory Commission decision.
"We await the written reasons tomorrow before making any further comment."

Are you serious? Of course Biting is worse than racism. It's physical assault with plenty of health risks. The fergie association? Last time I checked Suarez bit a Chelsea player.Red-4-Life wrote:Should have been 5 games max. I've seen worse get off with less. The Fergie Association strikes again

How did Defoe get away with it? 10 games is a joke though. He'll still come back and won the golden boot.

Hurting someone's feelings or giving someone a life threatening disease. Hardly even debatable really.

Re: Suarez - Gimme 10!
It's a bit OTT, but Suarez's problem was his previous IMO. Had it been the first time, an aberration, he might have got away with a few games, but he's now a serial biter. If you don't learn from your first punishment, it always increases for further offences of the same nature.

You'd have more credibility if you got your facts right as well, Suarez admitted using what was deemed racist language directly at Evra, whereas Terry was allegedly asking a question of old Anton. I agree it's a legal technicality but it's a fact.

Re: Suarez - Gimme 10!
I can't believe liverpool fans the way they stick up for suarez. suarez bit somebody. How you lot think that is acceptable is crazy.
I thought he'd get between 10-12 games for that.
He should be thankful that they still have 4 games left this season which mean nothing to lvpool, so he only misses 6 games at the start of next season
I say suarez deserved to kop that ban

Re: Suarez - Gimme 10!
You're certainly right, but that fell under the ridiculous ruling of not rerefereeing games. Because the ref saw it and took action, the FA's own rules stopped them punishing him further.nachoman wrote:No difference... However, that doesn't excuse Suarez.

No-one is saying he shouldnt cop a bit of a rest, but he hasnt killed anyone and Ive seen much worse happen on a pitch with less severe consequences. Defoe bites a player, yellow card.
Suarez bites a player, 10 game suspension.
Do they even consider how retarded they look with rulings such as these?

Totally agree. There is no way the English FA could give less than their Dutch counterparts for the same offence.#88 wrote:How is 10 matches a shock when he got 7 for the same offence only a few years ago!!!

Spot the difference:
2006:
2013:An FA spokesman said: "We are unable to take any action because the referee has already dealt with the incident.
"Fifa regulations prevent us from taking retrospective action."
Manchester City defender Ben Thatcher was punished by the FA after the event earlier this season when his forearm smash left Portsmouth midfielder Pedro Mendes in hospital.
However, that incident was deemed as exceptional because Mendes suffered serious injury but in most cases, the FA's hands are tied because of Fifa's stance on the issue of retrospective punishment.
If both incidents were viewed objectively either the FA would have seen Defoe's bight as exceptional circumstances and charged him further or Suarez's bight as fitting the standard 3 match ban for violent conduct. The incident was not seen by the match officials and has therefore been retrospectively reviewed – click here for a video explanation of ‘not seen incidents’.
It is alleged that the conduct of Suarez constitutes violent conduct and it is The FA’s contention that the standard punishment of three matches that would otherwise apply is clearly insufficient in these circumstances.
Anyway, no one's defending him and we're not up in arms that Suarez is banned, he deserves a ban for stupidty alone. But it's excessive considering he has no violent conduct record in England and when compared with other incidents either others have got off very lightly or he's been dealt a penalty that exceeds the crime.
How can they say for example that the officials saw Rooney elbow the Wigan player as much as Friend saw of Suarez biting Ivanovic? It's nuts.
At the end of the day, he's only got himself to blame.
-----------------------------
Just to pre-empt some cliches:
"If I did this at work I'd be sacked"
If you slide tackled Karen from Accounts on the way from the photocopier you'd probably be sacked too.
"If I did this on the street, I'd be arrested"
If you tried to man-handle someone in the street the way footballers man-handle off corners you'd be a sex offender.

We win the league and Liverpool are in the news for all the wrong reasons (again & again & again)
At least the Liverpool fans have an impressive pre-season to look forwards to.
