"60 x active referees and another 18 x assistant referees ".. that number is ambiguous. Most of them do one day or the other. There are some referees (and ARs) available both days. Keep in mind that the Saturday competition has grown over the last few years. The League is adamant that the priority is to get an official ref for the A games (even down to Div 5). If any left over, only then can appointing refs to reserves games be considered. Saturday competition is also stretched because traditionally most referees are available on a Sunday. As for assistant referees, most are with Elizabeth and Districts and these young lads and ladies find it difficult to get their parents to take them to games that are outside the northern area. Hence they do Sundays because most of the Div 1 and many of the Div 2 clubs are north of Gepps Cross. Throw in the unpredictability of referee injuries and special Saturday social occasions, it will always be a challenge.
The big thing that people don't realise is that even though referee numbers were the same as last year, there are more refs who have just started a career coming on board to replace the more experienced refs who are leaving. Given that it can take a new referee over 5 years to be anywhere near ready to take on a full blooded Div 1 game, a time will come where only inexperienced refs are left to do games and they will be unfairly forced to do a higher division game because there is no-one else.
I agree with Swanny... the verbal abuse has got worse and worse. These people who come to referee don't come for the money. They take out a whole half day of their time because they love the game and enjoy being involved. Suck the enjoyment of it and they will soon leave.
A few people in this thread have mentioned that it seems to be getting worse this season in particular. The refs report this abuse and threats to the League all the time but until the League dishes out what these people deserve, the refs will feel let down and eventually they will leave.

You'll need to learn the meaning of ambiguous.
If you read the original posts earlier in this thread, statements were made about a lack of referees available for some Saturday clubs. A reply was then posted which included reference to the abovementioned numbers. Though not implied, the mention of these numbers could have been interpreted by the Saturday clubs that there is an abundance of referees available to them. Hence the use of the term ambiguous - which means lacking clarity or definitiveness
Please don't ask me to learn the meaning of clarity or definitiveness
There has been some good points raised and I agree referees cop way to much abuse in the Amateur league....No where near as much though as club refs do...As I said, they promised but haven't even been close to delivering.. That is what irks me the most.

I hate to agree with Hitler (if you know what I mean), but he's pedantically correct.
What you meant was "the number of referees available" is ambiguous, however "that number" 60 and "that number" 18 are in no way ambiguous.

Was there an actual 'promise' though ? Maybe there was an aspiration to have official referees and assistants....not sure I remember the word 'promise' being used at the AGM.
At the Grove v Brahma game yesterday we had an official ref in the ressies game and 3 Officials in the first team game.
It maybe a rare occurence but is good when it does happen.

Wow.....Picking words out now
They made a "Statement".....Is that better, I know you like to be SAASL's white Knight where ever you can.
I didn't hear them say we will "try" to get refs for the grades discussed, from my memory the word
"Will" was used, as in there will be referees provided for all top 2 Divs 1st and reserve matches for both Saturday and Sunday.
As was said above, under promise and over deliver, go the other way and you open yourself up to criticism..

100% and the way it should be for a Competition as large and as old as the SAASL.
What will they do when all the Club referees get sick of the abuse they cop from opposition clubs and decide
not to pick up the whistle anymore?
I agree with the comments that things are getting worse with abuse and it seems like it is free reign if the guy is
club referee....Guy makes a mistake he is a cheat, Guy makes a call opposition don't like he is a bottle of shiraz cheat, Guy gives
a free to opposition, Bout time but your just trying to even up ya bottle of shiraz cheat.

Not word picking just addressing you repetition of the word promise and not delivering in an Amateur set up.
Not the Amateur Leagues white knight by any means, just pointing out how difficult it is from experience.
Difficult finding someone to run a line, take a net down, act as ballboy, fill out team sheets, run the barbie(canteen)...not just referees.

So you believe if the SAASL make a statement I should just take it as a passing comment?
In future if I receive correspondence from them or attend an AGM I should not take what is presented as a given...We'll just see how it goes?
Picking up on my use of the word "promise" is splitting hairs, seems I have more faith in the SAASL than you do as I
take their statements as a matter of fact and trust they will be carried out....
Once again, don't say you will do something if your actually going to try to do something.

It's pretty hard delivering a product if the product is out of stock
swannsong wrote:It's pretty hard delivering a product if the product is out of stock
could always not put the product up for sale.
They're not selling the product, the Referees Association are....SAASL are the delivery service.
Plus there's a few problems with returned stock, out of date stock and damaged stock !
I could understand if they were supplying than ran out of stock, these things happen but I have not received my initial order little own follow up orders.

i would suggest, saasra are the suppliers of the product but saasl definitely do the selling.
I see no blame at saasra's door here, they can only supply what they have in stock but their salesman are out their making promises that they can't keep.
Had saasl said at the start of the season that they will endeavour to get a ref to all games..... then no one would even be mentioning it but they said they would do it.
They've fallen for the shoddy salesman trick of over promising to appease the customer. Better to Under promise and then over deliver and the customer thinks you're a superstar.

As ironic as it may seem, it would not be a $1m comp if it were not for those volunteers !
Plus, the annual turnover is nowhere near $1m...there is quite a sum in savings and the interest on that sum offsets costs...otherwise affiliation fees, registration fees might be much higher for every club !

in 2012 the SAAFL reduced their Umpiring costs from $111,000 in 2011 to $26,500 in 2012
yes the SAAFL have a very good website but have you spoken to some of the clubs????
