This should make the AFL shut up about AFL being the oldest

Post by oldfart »

The AFL are always going on about their code being the oldest code of football to have rules laid down but this article with paintings going back to the reign of Henry V111 should prove their claims to be false.

This game is hundreds of years old, played every Christmas Day and New Years Day, and 100 times tougher than a game of footy. But I think the only rule is what time it starts.
(Gives you an insight into the type of medieval ball game from which football eventually developed.)

They are always going on about it.

They claimed it was the oldest code to have formalised rules on their 125th Anniversary and have banged on about it ever since.

Cornsey was the loudest voice claiming it in SA along with Michaelangelo Rucci in the Advertiser.

If you haven't heard the claim before you must have been out of the state!

It was a topic on this forum a couple of times from memory - if you don't believe me look it up for yourself!

I have heard him say this and he also wrote an article in the Sunday Mail about it a few years back.

It's wrong anyway, they've recently found details of a game in Sheffield that pre dates the afl by many years.

There was organised football played all over England and Scotland long before the Football League was founded in 1886 and strong regional competitions.

Aston Villa and Preston North End were the biggest clubs in Britain for many years and were among the main instigators of a national league to improve attendances - they already had crowds of around 10,000 and believed a national league would double that - and it did.

Association Football codified in 1863.
Australian Rules Football codified in 1859.

This is what they may be referring to.

You may be right but the Association Football rules were just a formalisation of rules that were already followed by most of the British Associations and simply referred to as Football long before that.

The title of Association Football was adopted as the standard to be used in the soon to be formed Football League, a fully Professional league, and was the first professional code of football in the world.

AFL was not a fully professional competition until the 1980's and is the only code of fully professional football with an uneven
competition, whereby every team does not play each other home and away, and the senior competition is not the peak of an organisational pyramid.

Every Australian Rules competition plays by it's own rules - there is no national standard let alone a world standard.

As much as i hate AFL heads, im getting sick of all this comparing Barossa Pearl. This "war of the codes" crap never ends. I wonder if any other country in the world has "war of the codes"? Does it happen in England with football and rugby? I have a feeling it dosent. I reckon they just get on with it. Thats what it should be like here. shiraz comparing apples and oranges lets just get on with it.

The reason we have the code squabbles is mainly due to the afl being the major code in Melbourne and the two rugby codes being the major codes in Sydney and Brisbane - the other states just get drawn into the fray to act as confirmation that afl is the major code in the nation.

Football got dragged into the fight in the late 1960's, when huge numbers of kids mainly from 'ethnic' backgrounds, looking for a more skill based sport than the roughhouse codes, started to prefer Football and the afl, in particular, suffered a massive turn-down in recruitment of juniors.

The reason few other countries have this problem is that in Australia the major population base in the South was of Irish catholic descent and in the East it was largely Welsh miners, the idiot sons of the wealthy and convicts who hated England.

When sport was becoming accessible to the working classes they tended to avoid those considered to be 'English', so Football was largely ignored until the late1920's, when large numbers of English people moved to Australia to work in the developing industrial base.

I hope this clears things up a little for you.

Didn't you play in the fist game in 1886?
