28 years today Jock Stein died live on TV whilst managing Scotland against Wales in Cardiff. Remember watching it on TV and hard to believe all this time has passed.
A very humble, honest man who amongst others tended to the dead , dying and injured after the Ibrox disaster. Was one of the most successful ever British managers and an all round decent bloke. RIP.

My father's hero. An amazing record. Won Europe before any English team could. Perhaps that's why he wasn't given a knighthood at the time. Showed up Busby and hung around with the "wrong crowd".

Would not knock Busby but decision to give one a knighthood and not the other was wrong, wonder if there is anything in the fact that Stein, Busby and Shankly ( three of the greatest ever British Managers) were all bought up in tough mining villages in Lanarkshire or Ayrshire.

The fact they came from working class backgrounds would certainly have counted against them due to the class politics of the time, but Busby was a special case as he was a national hero and they had to give him a Gong to appease the masses.
Even sir Alex would have probably been denied a Knighthood in those days.
