I reckon our scouts would be good at putting up a tent and doing bob a job, but no idea about football.haywood djablowme wrote:Emery sold Soldudo to Spurs for £30m

However, I'm sure Unai will know his way around the backwaters of European football on Thursday nights next season. Enjoy all those Sunday league games (about your level)

Unai Emery's first signing as Arsenal manager is likely to be Stephan Lichtsteiner, a 34-year-old right back late of Juventus, on the bench as much as in the team, and available on a free transfer. It's a bold new era, indeed.

Re: Arsenal 2017/2018
There is a new Manager/Head Coach, a new system, a new structure, a new way of doing things and a new energy at Arsenal and I for one am excited.
If only because what we'll have this coming season is something "different".
But Arsenal realise that success isn't instant. There's a process involved.
Emery has said that "Day after day you try to improve a little bit, you try to move forward. That’s what we have to do. There are so many stories in sport of people who achieve things that were not believed possible at the beginning of the journey, because they focused on that process of just getting a little better every day".
It'll take time but I'm hopeful that we'll see Arsenal back amongst the top 4 (at least) sometime soon. He's got a big job, but IMO he has the bones of a decent squad which I'm sure he can improve upon by adding the kind of discipline, organisation etc that he's known for (and lets face it, that's been missing the last few years).
Let's see how responsive the players are to his ideas and methods.

Re: Arsenal 2017/2018
Emery:
“I think the most important thing is to connect with people and have those personal relationships. Heart to heart, head to head. The heart transmits emotion, the head transmits the intelligence. So it’s really important to have that connection both on a personal and collective level. What you are looking for is a shared experience. It’s true that you get the famous egos in football but that is true of top players and players who are not so good. I’m a coach that has come from second division, gone through to the first division, coached at PSG and now at Arsenal. And really the essence of it all is people.”
That's another difference from Wenger’s focus on freedom and expression with the ball and it will be interesting to see how quickly Emery can effect the players with his style.

He's a proven winner with loads of experience (keeping in mind Mertesacker has retired, Koscielny is out injured till the end of the year at least) to help out some of our young defenders coming through.
I know likes of Papastathopoulos and Lichtsteiner are unlikely to make us champions, but they might help us get back to a level where we can start to bring in the kinds of players who can.

The squad he puts out in Aug 2018 won't be the same squad he puts out in Aug 2020. Time will be required to fill in the holes left by 10 years of underachievement. We have time

Re: Arsenal 2017/2018
No real surprise, he would only be a squad player at any of the big six and he'll end up at a mid level team where, when he's fit, he'll make them a better team. With his track record, it's a gamble though for any club.ozzie owl wrote:Jack Wilshire definately leaving the Gunners.

I see in the news that Arsenal are to be sponsored by a genocidal African dictator. Perhaps he needs more Goons to do his dirty work

I don't think the Bundesliga is the highest standard so it's hard to tell how good he is, or could be. He's the fourth choice (at best) for Germany and he can't be that highly rated if they let him go for £20m.haywood djablowme wrote:Welcome Mr Leno

Jack agreed to take a pay cut but Emery couldn't guarantee him game time.. so nothing to do with money! Out with the old in with the new seems to be his attitude, time will tell if it worksNice One Cyril wrote:

Bump
Very unhappy about Jack going but such is life. first signs look promising though, more direct overall and more aggressive in defence and going for goal. Unlikely to win anything this season but for the first time in a few years am actually excited about what’s ahead. Ozil needs to play football better than he plays the race card
