To be expected these days unfortunately, the foreigners have taught them.

nah...dont buy it...its always been there...
nevertheless, to learn something is one thing.....to chose to use it is another....no one forced them...except the time when Hoddle instructed Owen to fall easily in the penalty area...

Part of the problem is that, for donkeys years, defenders got away with ragdolling forwards and refs gave nada. Now, as always seems the way, it's swung too far the other way, forwards don't even try to keep their feet and you can't touch anyone.

Re: Maguire Axed from England Squad
No, it definitely hasn't. Obviously, there has been the occasional person. Some Leeds players in the 70's did it (I'm trying to remember who it was who was known for it - Clarke I think) and Franny Lee (Man City) was well known for it. However, the modern scurge has increased since more foreigners were allowed into teams. Remember when Klinsman went to spurs and it opened the doors for the increase.

maybe the link is the:
* increase in popularity of the First Division/EPL
* greater access to televised games
* etc etc

Either way the notion that diving for penalties is a purely foreign import should be dismissed for the empty generalisation that it is. Footballers in the English leagues were diving like Esther Williams long before the ban on overseas players was lifted in the late 70s.
After Francis Lee, rightly or wrongly dubbed Lee Won Pen, went down when he was playing for Derby County against Leeds United at the Baseball Ground in 1975 an enraged Norman Hunter promptly chinned him with a punch of which Henry Cooper would have been proud.

No one has said it's purely a foreign import. However, it's a lot more prevalent amongst foreign players.

Re: Maguire Axed from England Squad
cause your assertion is inaccurate/wrong.
weve already confirmed that English players were diving and subsequently getting a reputation in the First Division, prior to the ban on foreign players being lifted. This surely contradicts your statement that it was 'foreigners who taught them'...
others might even argue that your comment is racial fearmongering....

Before the foreign invasion it was extremely rare that English players would dive. Foreigners came over and started diving (e.g.. Klinsmann), the balance of numbers of foreigners diving v Englishman diving shows it Is mostly foreigners doing it. Therefore those same some numbers suggest those foreigners taught those English players to dive.
As said above, some English players dived before but very rare. So rare that there names are known from doing it many years ago.
Meanwhile, foreigners have been regularly been diving for decades.

Re: Maguire Axed from England Squad
ahhhh...I can see what you did....
you want to change the conversation away from...."the naughty foreigners taught the English how to dive" to "the naughty foreigners do it more often"
I happen to agree that its become more prevalent in the EPL as the game has gone global (movement of players/greater access to televised games) but definitely dont agree that it was the naughty foreigners who 'taught' it to the naïve Englishmen.
I dont think its semantics...more about racial stereotyping and nationalist jingoism...

Re: Maguire Axed from England Squad
I have not changed the conversation away at all. There are more foreigners in the English game, more foreigners dive, diving has increased since the introduction of more foreigners. Coincidence? Probably not, so whilst we don't know as we are not on the training ground, it's a fair conclusion to draw that the foreigners have taught those cheats to dive.MegaBonus wrote: ↑Wed Oct 14, 2020 8:29 am ahhhh...I can see what you did....

Re: Maguire Axed from England Squad
love the contradiction....since you admit that you dont know whats happening on the training ground, it would be an UNFAIR conclusion to draw.......Probably not, so whilst we don't know as we are not on the training ground, it's a fair conclusion to draw that the foreigners have taught those cheats to dive.
you used the word 'taught'....still sticking to it???

He looks like he's mentally exhausted, perhaps he needs a holiday. Mykonos is nice I hear.

Re: Maguire Axed from England Squad
He was rubbish and he took an horrendous touch, but there's something seriously wrong with the way fouls are being given in the modern game. I'm all for stopping the dangerous follow through when a tackler goes through the ball directly in line with the player and cleans him up, even though it's exactly how we were taught to tackle as kids, but Maguire wins the ball and the line of his slide is across Dolberg who probably could have got out of the way had he chosen to, it's more like Dolberg runs into Maguire's leg. What happens if Dolberg's foot comes down on Maguire's ankle and breaks it, is that a red card the other way? It's a football collision and isn't even a foul as far as I'm concerned, just because someone falls over doesn't mean a foul has been committed, it's supposed to be a contact sport.

The game's very soft at the moment.

Re: Maguire Axed from England Squad
Modern football is rubbish
I reckon I must now follow the two most boring teams in English football. To be fair Arteta was handed an overpriced bag of lemons though still not optimistic entertainment is high on his agenda. As for southgate fuck me, the most creativity he could generate came from Henderson, Kane & Coady etc’s amateur dramatics. What a waste

Re: Maguire Axed from England Squad
want to stop the diving. easy, fifa to give carte blanche to refs to red card divers early in the game. no coach in his right mind would want to play a man down for most of the game and the coaches would stop the actors quicksmart. no benefit no advantage problem solved. just think. the actors could return to the stage and the game could become MANLY again as it was in the good old days when the poms gave it to the world to stuff up.

TBF to Southgate, that was nothing like his best eleven and that was made even worse by Maguire's early bath.

Who was missing, Sterling the headless chicken? If a coach can't get a joined up attacking team out of the squad that was available then they are not fit to be a coachNice One Cyril wrote: ↑Fri Oct 16, 2020 6:52 amBoring, boring Arsenal, bring back George Graham.
