Post by ozzie owl »

Goalkeepers: Jordan Pickford (Everton), Nick Pope (Newcastle), Aaron Ramsdale (Arsenal)

Defenders: Harry Maguire (Manchester United), Luke Shaw (Manchester United), Eric Dier (Tottenham), John Stones (Manchester City), Kyle Walker (Manchester City), Kieran Trippier (Newcastle), Conor Coady (Everton), Ben White (Arsenal), Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool)

Midfielders: Jude Bellingham (Borussia Dortmund), Mason Mount (Chelsea), Conor Gallagher (Chelsea), Declan Rice (West Ham), Jordan Henderson (Liverpool), Kalvin Phillips (Manchester City)

Forwards: James Maddison (Leicester), Phil Foden (Manchester City), Jack Grealish (Manchester City), Harry Kane (Tottenham), Bukayo Saka (Arsenal), Raheem Sterling (Chelsea), Callum Wilson (Newcastle), Marcus Rashford (Manchester United)

IMO lucky ones : Maguire and Phillips .

Not sure how Foden, Maddison, Grealish or Saka are forwards, wingers and mids more like. Rubbish defenders, but there are hardly any great defenders these days, everyone is a midfielder.

Southgate's starting team:

Pickford (OK but I think Ramsdale is better)
Walker (good if fit, I'm worried that TAA will be ahead of him)
Dier (the name says it all, takes too many risks as a centre half)
Maguire (shouldn't even be on the plane)
Shaw (hoping for Trips, but Gareth loves the Mancs, average though)
Phillips (cannot be fit, Energiser Bunny player)
Rice (good player, don't need Phillips if Rice sits)
Mount (OK, but rarely produces anything for England, not sure why)
Henderson (hard working, in for his 'experience')
Sterling (Gareth's love child, never misses, never passes)
Kane (quality but will be starved of chances)

I predict 6 points in the group, a win in the next round and then home. Gareth knighted for services to diversity.

Given the squad Gareth is taking and knowing that he'll play 442, who would you start with?

Ramsdale

Walker
White
Stones
Trippier

Rice
Maddison
Saka
Grealish

Foden
Kane

At least we'd have a chance of scoring a few, I'm pretty sure our defence isn't up to much.

Fikayo Tomori getting no look in from Southgate, unbelievable. One of best CBs in world at the moment, he would have needed to watch him for 5 minutes to tell he's so much better than the ones been selected.

Have to agree Tomori miles better than Maquire, he is only a bench player at Man U now.

Sadly for Tomori he was shithouse in the two games against Chelsea last month and likely blew his chance with Southgate. Considering our precarious defensive situation it is odd that him and even Tarkowski and Burn were not given a run in the last year

I always feel that Harry plays better with someone quite close to him, so I'd prefer a two up top. You could drop Foden, push Maddison forward and put Bellingham in the middle. I just wonder if Rice and Bellingham are both 'box to box' mids.

I reckon that one looks a bit better, Rice will stay back if he's told

Wilson up front is a threat to any defense.

At long last Southgate has taken the handbrake off. I know it was only Iran, but England look so much more dangerous with a more attacking mid in there, just imagine how good we could be with Maddison as well. Personally I didn't think Mount did anything special and, despite scoring a virtual tap in, Sterling didn't really either and I'd replace those two, but something to build on, I just hope he doesn't revert to type when Phillips is fit.

I know it was only Iran
That’s the main point. Iran was useless

Sterling, Grealish and Kane - see ya later

Rashford should start

Dropping Kane would be like dropping Modric ;-)

Thought I’d be asleep by half time in truth so this was a bit better but I reckon Iran weren’t in the best frame of mind. Some things stay the same unfortunately McGuire still shaky and Sterling still gives the ball away. Replace both please

I reckon Rashford is pretty one dimensional, good running in on goal which is fine but it’s not too hard for good teams to freeze him out, especially if Southgate insists on playing without a 10. Play Rashford and Maddison and / or Grealish then fair enough

Maddison Rashford would work
Kane bench Grealish bench/home
