Best development for 16,17 year old boys

Just wondering other people's opinion on the best course of development for junior boys when they hit the u16's and 17's age groups ?

Are academy's better for improvement or playing and training with a set team?

Its a very tough age and lots drop out. They need to play with their mates and enjoy it. The development and opportunitys will only come if they are happy.

playing and training in a team with game time. 16’s or 18’s.

I think playing and training with their mates but then surely academy training once a week wouldn't hurt
