bold move by the kiwi captain and coach to have him in the side but catching the looney lefty was still his highlight

Who cares what nationality the coach is.

Stokes isn't English, just like khawaja, laubasagne, nesser, renshaw and inglis aren't australian.

if Lyon is out for the rest of the game it will make it hard to take the remaining 16 wickets.
Game evenly poised - we need to come out and bowl well just like England did first session yesterday

Still have 3 quicks, a medium pacer and a few part time spinners who can share the load.

Maybe we could activate a sub? ;-)

Lyon just needs to open and duck into a Joe Root bouncer. Concussion.

It worked for warner in India.

On first viewing I thought Smith had dropped it.

More I watched, more he caught it.

Then I've seen a still of it this morning. 100% -dropped.

The long-awaited report by the Independent Commission for Equity in Cricket was published on Tuesday, and offered a damning critique of both English cricket, and Marylebone Cricket Club - the hosts for this week's second Test against Australia at Lord's.

The issues raised in the report have overshadowed England's preparations for the contest, and at the start of his pre-match press conference, captain Ben Stokes read the following statement.

"Just before I start, I want to make it clear I have not read the report as it only came out last night.

"To the people involved in the game who have been made to feel unwelcome or unaccepted in the past, I am deeply sorry to hear of your experiences. Cricket is a game that needs to celebrate diversity on all fronts because without diversity, this game would not be where it is at today.

"As a sport, we need to learn from past mistakes and do all we can to make people feel safe and be themselves at every level. I have been an England player since 2011 and I feel very fortunate to have been a part of some incredibly diverse teams and love how everyone has a different story to tell.

"We must go further and be more inclusive and diverse because the game I love - and millions worldwide love - should be enjoyed without fear of discrimination or judgement whether that be due to your upbringing, race or gender.

"As I said earlier, everyone has a different story to tell. I am Ben Stokes, born in New Zealand, a state-educated pupil who dropped out of school at 16 with one GCSE in PE. I needed help with the spelling and grammar in this speech and I am currently sitting here as the England men's Test captain.

"It is clear there is so much more the game has to do and, as players, we really want to be a part of that to ensure this is truly a sport for everyone."

https://au.sports.yahoo.com/ashes-joe-r ... 23188.html
Joe Root has drawn the ire of Aussie cricket fans after claiming a controversial catch late on day five in a thrilling Ashes Test at Lord’s.

Super-sub Marnus Labuschagne entered Lord's as trivia-night fodder but left as part of Ashes folklore, doing the heavy lifting alongside Travis Head as Australia salvaged a dramatic draw in the absence of Steve Smith.

Concussion substitute Labuschagne, who replaced Smith in the XI on Sunday morning, scored 59 from 100 balls as the tourists batted out 47.3 overs on day five of the second Test, Australia finishing 6-154 after being set a target of 267.

However his dismissal sparked major uproar.

Root claimed a low catch to dismiss Labuschagne, with former England captain Michael Vaughan among those suggesting the third umpire's verdict was wrong.

Despite replays appearing to show the ball touching the grass before it entered Root’s hands, third umpire Joel Wilson upheld the on-field verdict of out.

Root and Labuschagne exchanged words after the wicket at 6.38pm local time, with the former holding up his finger to signal out and the latter shaking his head as he trudged off.

West Indies legend Michael Holding questioned the decision in commentary.

“I just don’t think he caught it,” Holding said.

After play, Root said he was 100 per cent sure he caught it, hitting back at some claims from fans that he’d fibbed because of the importance of the situation.
