Should all coaches be licenced?

Post by johnydep »

Seeing the FFSA advertise JUNIOR LICENCE COACHING COURSE reminded me of last years warning that all coaches must be licenced.

Sounds good, however how many coaches went through the year without licences? And how many starting the new season with out a licence?

I've heard reasons such as "no time", "I put my name down and the FFSA did not call me", "I've been a professional player, I don't need a licence", etc.

What's everyones thoughts on the subject?

bloody oath they should and if they bring the game into disripute or get red carded, sent from ground etc then it should be revoked.

the higher the position a coach or administrator in any club the more they should be accountable for their conduct

As a parent, I would be rather apprehensive about a coach teaching my son if he wasn't licensed.
A bit like me, as a child care worker, having had no formal training? Us parents are giving our children to you albiet for a couple of hours a week, but during those couple of hours, I would want to know they're in very capable hands.

I know that SAWSA have insisted on coaching licences and police clearance - I assume that will remain so now they are merging with FFSA?
I also assume FFSA will have a VOAN agreement so you can get the police clearance for free (basically for being a volunteer working with vulnerable groups) if a coach is working with juniors boys or girls, etc.
With women's football this basically means all coaches, as there are many 'juniors' playing at senior level.

Yes all coaches must be licenced as we need to have standards and reporting structures.
For both development and player safety.

If it meant they learnt how to overuse cones and flags no !
A good coach has imagination and a licence won't give you that.

Just wondering what licences do you hold and what teams (age groups) (not academies) have you coached?

Of Course all coaches should be accredited.

I went to a course about two years ago, and the info you learn is fantastic, esp hearing the instructors own info about coaching.

and the networking i made at the course was great, i still keep in contact with most of those coaches from the course to trade infomation.
