Vyntra shines as Panathinaikos route PAOK
Panathinaikos were comfortable 3-0 winners over league rivals PAOK Sunday evening at the OAKA Spiros Louis. Loukas Vyntra netted twice and Vangelis Mantzios added a third in a frantic 10-minute span, as the Greens leapfrogged their opponents in the Greek Super League standings.

The sides - which played to a goalless draw in Thessaloniki in October - entered Sunday's encounter separated by a sole point. PAOK were sitting in second place on 40 points with their Athenian opponents third on 39.

Given this proximity, one would have been hard-pressed to predict such a one-sided encounter - especially in light of PAOK's Greek Cup defeat of Olympiakos in the midweek.

Though the Northerners were assured in defense in the early going - Stelios Malezas anchoring the back four - they were lacking the goal-scoring prowess of Zlatan Muslimovic, who started the match on the bench. Lino and Ilias Anastasakos were willing to run the channels, but PAOK sparingly committed extra men forward and failed to register a shot in the entire first half.

Instead, all the action in the match's opening stanza was at Kostas Chalkias' end. The Greek international's services were required just four minutes into the proceedings, Mantzios forcing a save with a snap shot from an acute angle.

Two minutes later Mantzios was again on the end of a Panathinaikos move, Nilsson driving forward and picking out the striker, who blazed his effort over the bar.

On 25 minutes Giorgos Karagounis would try his luck, the talisman watching his thunderous shot be spilled by Chalkias, who was relieved to see his defense clear the danger.

The PAOK "Number 1" looked even less assured five minutes from halftime, fumbling a corner which ultimately fell to Gilberto, who steered his effort over the bar.

Chalkias would produce a fine save just two minutes later, however, turning away Mantzios' close-range volley.

What the Greens failed to do the entire first half, they managed to do just four minutes into the restart. Sotiris Ninis' corner was met by Loukas Vyntra, who beat Chalkias with a towering header. It was Vyntra's first Super League goal for Panathinaikos - and an important one at that, as it lifted his side's spirits.

The hosts nearly doubled their advantage just five minutes later, the industrious Cleyton jinking through PAOK's defense before cutting to Dimitris Salpingidis, who lashed his effort wide of Chalkias' near post.

The second goal would come on 55 minutes, though, and courtesy of another set piece. Cleyton's curling free kick found Vyntra, who turned in his close-range header.

The writing was on the wall for PAOK, and Panathinaikos were happy to seize the momentum. On 55 minutes Ninis was determined to chase down a ball along the end line, dispossess Malezas, and cross invitingly for Mantzios, who glanced his header across Chalkias to add to the crowd's zeal.

It took the visitors 66 minutes to have their first look at goal, substitute Muslimovic showing his quality with a purposeful run into Panatha's area. PAOK were keen to restore some of their pride, but the Bosnian's low strike was kept out by the legs of Mario Galinovic.

From there, Panathinaikos would affirm their dominance, Ninis watching his drive from the apex of the penalty area go just high of Chalkias' crossbar on 83 minutes.

Four minutes later, Lazaros Christodoulopoulos would have a go from a similar position, but Chalkias got down well to parry.

The former PAOK player would turn to provider shortly after, eluding his marker and sending a ball across the face of goal for Ante Rukavina, who failed to get a telling touch.

But by then the result was virtually sealed, Henk Ten Cate's men moving into second place.

Panathinaikos (Henk Ten Cate) - Galinovic, Nilsson, Vyntra, Wawrzyniak, Spyropoulos, Simao, Gilberto, Ninis (Christodoulopoulos 83'), Karagounis (C) (Cleyton 46'), Salpingidis (Rukavina 74'), Mantzios

PAOK (Fernando Santos) - Chalkias, Arabatzis, Pablo Contreras, Malezas, Darlas, Veron, Sergio Conceicao (C), Sorlin (Vieirinha 81'), Pablo Garcia, Lino (Muslimovic 55'), Anastasakos (Athanasiadis 63')

Goals - Vyntra (49'),Vyntra (55'), Mantzios (58')

Bookings - Darlas (30'), Pablo Garcia (50'), Sorlin (54'), Wawrzyniak (62'), Athanasiadis (64'), Muslimovic (82')

5th will qualify for Europa league only if one of the teams above them win the cup.
&
qualification for CL is much different. 1st place will not go direct to groups again but go into qualifers against other teams that have won their league.
2nd place will go into CL qualifiers against teams who didnt win their league but still qualified for CL.
