The best referees do not tend to take themselves too seriously until the time is needed. The crap (and unfortunately often the younger) ones strutt around like they're king of the world with a pipe up their muscat...

it all is to do with the context of the game - high level/pressure/intensity match, the stricter you have to be. not saying in easy games you be lazy of course.

it gets cut throat when you have a punch up between the parents up in the stands

very much so and it can be hard to re-assert control over a wild match when taken the game gets crazy, players start getting aggressive and go in for dangerous tackles and this is where fights tend to break out

when i played...our pre season games were fights fights and more fights game got abandoned once as well
