Division 1 - 1975
bloodypassit requested this material and it goes against my better judgement to promote
Parafield Gardens....but here it is.....33 years on !
I remember that Junior Cup Semi - Final shoot out with Findon (lost 7-6). I scored from the spot but my mate Tony Beck didn't !
My friend Paul Hudson [now a leading Bridge (cards) player] was equal top goalscorer in Division 2 as the Downs were Division 2 Champions
for the first of their 4 Division 2 titles (the yo-yo years 1975, 1977, 1981, 1984)
Gardens Reserves also won the League Cup Double that year !

"ahh yes..... 1975 THE DOUBLE DOUBLE !"
Inter came close one year! & the Downs just missed out couple years ago!
but I believe it's only ever been done once...
& its the longest standing record in the S.A.A.S.L. 33yrs...
Swanny is that correct ?

Thanks Swanny (aka Amatuer League Historian) that's what I was asking if 75 was the only Double Double which is what I believed, but I'm happy for the facts
What record ???
I still believe it's the longest standing record since it was last done in the SAASL???
But again happy for the correction Swanny

Re: Division 1 - 1975
I guess you can take solace in that Parafield Gardens are the only team currently in the SAASL to have won the Double-Double.

Re: Division 1 - 1975
Two of those 1975 1st division clubs, Croydon Park and Hindmarsh, seem to be made up mainly of ex-federation old boys from the 1960's... with Budapest well represented. Croydon Park had Steve Herczeg, who played for Australia against North Korea in the world cup in 1965, and also Frank Balter, who played for the state against Everton in 1964.
I never saw either of those two clubs play, but I reckon they would have been "slow but skillful..."!

Re: Division 1 - 1975
I played against them back then, they played on the South Parklands and I think Villi Militsis (of Villis fame) might have been responsible for the food back then.winzor wrote:Two of those 1975 1st division clubs, Croydon Park and Hindmarsh, seem to be made up mainly of ex-federation old boys from the 1960's... with Budapest well represented. John Huider was ever present for Budapest.
Downs had a former Full Australian International Representative Clem Higgins playing for them that year (Chris Higgins father ).

Re: Division 1 - 1975
From memory, Croydon Park weren't really slow - but then again they had the ball skills to do without much pace. In those days, many Polonia players who would retire from Fed team would almost always go on and play with Croydon Park. The boys certainly knew how to sink a beer or two after the game. Old Rick Sifkus' (RIP) caravan parked alongside the Hudson Reserve would make a killing back then with food and beer. Frankie B still pops into Croydon club now and then.winzor wrote:Two of those 1975 1st division clubs, Croydon Park and Hindmarsh, seem to be made up mainly of ex-federation old boys from the 1960's... with Budapest well represented. If you feel serene that is cheerful or consoled, in the knowledge that Gardens have won the Double-Doublenugget66 wrote:Ahhh the solace...
Tell me Swanny, is solace the same as serenity???
then I suppose it's a bit like solace, but solace to me is like "you're happy being the second team to win the Double-Double".

the only other Clubs to Achieve the Double Double was Munno Para Apac in 1971 & Gardens in 1975.
It would be interesting to know how many Clubs entered the Challenge Cup in those years.
Win Lose or Draw we ALL couldn't be prouder of what the Gardens boys have Achieved, the Cichanowski, League Double & Back 2 Back this year....
Good luck to all players & Clubs in the Final.

Good stuff swansong with all your history I couldn't let all your hard work go to waste. I work down the road from Villis and have lunch there every now and then and printed the Hindmarsh team in A3 and handed it to him.
