Re: Euro Qualifiers - Live , Setanta
Might give zeljks something to talk about but not me i fear. Croatia too strong in the middle i think. They have come into some wonderful form in the past couple of games and we may struggle with the little maestro Modric. If we dont contain him early, he will bring players like Kranjcar, Klasnic and Eduardo into the fray which has the potential to carve us up but the good thing i guess is that its in Greece and at the much intimidating Karaiskakis Stadium which definitely gives us the 12th man advantage but im certainly more nervous about playing them this time around than before we drew with them in the first meeting in Croatia. With Papadopoulos and Maniatis suspended and Ninis out injured, we are pushing our luck a little but hopefully teenage sensation Fetfatzidis will recover in time to at least make it on the bench while Croatia will have a full squad to choose from. This really is a battle of the defences with Greece only having conceded 4 goals and Croatia 5 goals in their 8 games each to date. However, Croatia has scored 16 goals to Greece' 10 with 6 of those Croat goals coming in their last 2 encounters and so on current form, you would suggest Croatia may have enough fire power to overcome a stubborn Greek defence. Greece though will take heart from the fact that in Croatias last game, Israel were well on top of the Croats and had their measure until an Israeli was shown a red card which saw the game turn on its head and allowed Croatia to come back and defeat its opponet 3-1. Eduardo is in some fine goal scoring form and is his nations 2nd highest goal scorer of all time and with Modric in some career best form for his club Tottenham which he has continued on from last season, the Croats will (for me) go into this game slight favourtite although Greece is always hard to beat in Greece and the Karaiskaki Stadium is every opponents worst nightmare so we are in for a cracker me thinks. Hopefully a Greek win but a draw or win for Croatia will almost certainly book its direct passage into the EURO 2012 Finals!!!Bomber wrote:I suppose the Greece v Croatia game will give Zelk and Col something else to "chat" about.

Greece 2 v 0 Croatia
Samaras 71, Gekas 79
WOW, a little shocked actually. Game was stopped in the 2nd minute by English referee Howard Webb because of crowd violence.
With the game restarted some 6 minutes later after order was restored, the first half hour was typical of 2 teams not wanting to give anything away and was played in a reserved fashion with Greece not really prepared to push forward with any great urgency. Croatia were content to keep it that way knowing a draw would keep it at the top of the group going into the last game with a home fixture v Latvia. Croatia had Greece on the back foot and in control with Tzorvas having to make the first save of the game (though easy) from a weak Kranjcar shot. Modric had the midfield in control and Croatia looked the only team likely to add change to the scoreboard. Just after the half hour mark, Greece decided that it should probably start attacking and went forward with purpose on 2 or 3 occasions and should of gone ahead through Fanis Gekas who had a ball delivered perfectly to his head by Salpingidis down the right side only to header the ball straight at Croat keeper Pletikosa with the whole goal at his mercy from 6 yards. After 7 added minutes of stoppage tine thanks to the crowd problems at the start of the game, both teams went into the half time break locked at nil all.
With the 2nd half underway, whatever Greece coach Fernando Santos said to his charges at the break had an immediate impact with Greece coming out on the attack from the whistle and again should have gone ahead through Gekas in the 48th with another perfect cross this time from Zaradoukas giving Gekas the perfect opportunity to make Pletikosa work only to squander another great chance by again heading straight at the Croatian No 1. Croatia coach Slaven Bilic took off an uninspiring Eduardo but that didn't stop the Greeks who went from strength to strength with Karagounis and Samaras overtaking the middle 3rd of the park with Modric left chasing shadows with the rest of his team mates. With Greece dominating possession but not really scaring their opponents around Pletikosa's goal, Karsgounis rook a corner in the 71st that came straight back to him which he put back in for Samaras finishing truly to give Greece the goal they needed to top the group for the moment. Only 8 minutes later, another Karagounis corner met Gekas perfectly and with another free header, it was 3rd time lucky for Greece's top scorer and he made no mistake giving his team a commanding 2 nil lead which Croatia were never going to peg back. Gekas goal sprang the Croats into some urgency and for 5 minutes they went forward for the first time since half time with purpose but it wasn't to be, the Greeks again gaining control of the ball and knocking it around for the next 10 or so minutes with some confident ball possession that allowed them to wind the clock down and post their most memorable win since winning the EURO trophy in 2004. The win puts Greece back on top of Group F with the winner of the group to be decided on Tuesday where a Greek win in Georgia will give them a 3rd straight appearance in the EURO finals next European summer. Croatia hosts Latvia knowing their fate is in the hands of Georgia with their only chance of automatic progression into EURO 2012 is by pulling a better result than Greece come Tuesday.

Reports state it Started downtown Athens where a group of "right wing" Croat supporters were singing and chanting Anti Greek and Serbian songs/chants. Once inside stadium, 100 Greek supporters wearing hoods broke into the area of the stand closed off protecting Croat fans behind the Greek bench and started belting the shiraz out of them. Webb stops game while riot police disperse Greek hooded fans from area and then Croat fans turn on riot police throwing flares and seats ripped up from stadium. Riot police send tear gas (some reports also state some sort of sprayed chemical) to subdue Croatian fans and after order is restored, referee Webb restarts game. This (inside the Karaiskakis) all in about 5 or 6 minutes of violence. Beats me why fans of any country would sing/chant anti Greek slogans in Athens of all places. The Greek and Turkish hooligan supporters have a reputation for being amongst the craziest in Europe so Its obvious provocation was only going to end up in this sort of situation. Ridiculous really and in a time where Greece is in a financial crisis, any excuse to let your frustrations out was always going to be evident. In my opinion, the authorities should not have allowed those Croatian fans into the stadium who were part of the downtown Athens anti Greek/Serb slogan singing/chanting participation. It was a fire waiting for some fuel to further escalate out of control. In hindsight, where Greece won the game, luckily it wasn't called offBomber wrote:Crowd violence? Tbh Croats storming Athens is no surprise..Greeks don't know how to defend their economy let alone their own capital city...what a fall from grace....
Re: Euro Qualifiers - Live , Setanta
Are you serious??? What was such a "shamozzle for the Greeks"??? And if Greece was embarrassing to watch, let's not comment on Croatia hey??? The second half was a very good display of Football from Greece whether you want to admit it or not and probably some of the best Football I've seen them play in 5 years. Completely dominated possession and had your lot chasing shadows while pushing the ball around very nicely.CSC1 wrote: My news is that the Croat fans ran a muck ...absolute shamozzle for the Greeks. As for "Croats storming Athens is no surprise", you make it sound like you've done it so many times before pffft I could go on to comment about defending our capital city but History is probably some distorted facts to you and if you want to talk about anyone not being able to defend something, look no further than your national team who couldn't even defend their lead at the top of Group F for 1 game

First half I agree was crap and you guys were the better team although no real chances for anyone to brag about. 2nd half, I thought we were very good with our ball passing and possession and our constant willingness to attack you guys. Everytime you touched the ball, we were quick to close you down and win back possession and played with purpose. Was very pleased with the way we played 2nd half.Zeljko Jurin wrote:Great second half ??? In EURO 04, it was 1 corner 1 goal and so we've improved since then taking it to 2 corners 2 goals but in all fairness, Gekas should have had a hatrick with 2 headers he put straight in the arms of Pletikosa where either side of him would of been goals from such close range. We had quite a few chances 2nd half but just couldn't capitalize till Samaras strike in the 71st.
As for those "reports" I mentioned, this straight from a source in Athens
Turns out there are some right wing Croatian fans in Athens who caused trouble downtown before the game. They also chanted anti Greek & Serb songs and done some damages outside the stadium. So I suppose those 100 Greek hooligans had already opened a war with them before kick off
Like I said, there were "reports", don't shoot the messenger, was just relaying what I heard though considering the National teams games in Greece are nearly always well behaved crowds (contrary to some clubs crowds), I have no reason to believe the reports as being false. As far as I'm concerned, stupidity from both Croatians singing anti Greek songs in Athens and then the 100 Greek hooligans who managed to break through the barriers separating the traveling fans from the home fans in the stadium to attack them. Luckily enough, referee Webb didn't abandon the whole game because of a few couple hundred idiots who nearly spoiled it for what was otherwise and almost always is a well behaved crowd in Greece for the National teams games
