While it would be great to see Warnie play again on the Test arena. He retired five years and lets remember him as the games greatest ever spin bowler. Bowling four overs in 20/20 is lot easier than blowing in test cricket.

Sobers was number 1 for me.

higher ave than Richards and Lara and more test 100s than Richards (in less tests).

Have to agree to disagree on that one then. To me Sobers was the best cricketer to ever play the game but not the best batsmen. If you have him as the best west indian batsmen then I'm sure you would agree with the best cricketer part.

My opinion, for the record:

Best cricketer: Sobers (Kallis)
Best Bowler (fast): Walsh (McGrath)
Best Bowler (spin): Murali (Warne)
Best Batsmen: Richards (Lara)
Best Keeper (gloveman): Russell (Dujon)
Best Fielder: Rhodes (I struggled - but my heart said Collingwood)

it was a superb tournament, 60 over cricket was great. Batsmen had time to build an innings, bowlers had decent spells.

I would have Viv as the best batsman I have seen live though, or watched live on TV in my lifetime.

Bowler would have to be Angus Fraser, ridiculously under rated.

Fielder, probably Rhodes but Randall was something else too, in the days of fielders being statues most the time he was simply superb.

Re: Shane Warne - come in spinner

Post by adam »

AUSTRALIAN Cricket captain Michael Clarke hasn't ruled out a Shane Warne return to the Test team for next year's Ashes in England.

Indeed, he is so serious about the possibility that he has spoken to Cricket Australia about it on several occasions.

Earlier this week, Shane Warne tweeted that he would come out of retirement if Clarke asked him to. Warne later clarified his position, saying he meant that he "could" play, not "would" play, and that the scenario was just hypothetical.

But last night, speaking to finance guru Anthony Bell in a Q and A at the annual 'Sail With the Stars' fundraiser for The Loyal Foundation in Sydney, Clarke appeared to suggest a Warne Ashes comeback was more than just a hypothetical chance.

Joking that 'there are no media in the room' the always amiable Clarke spoke passionately about his admiration for the 43-year-old former Test spinner.

"Warnie is looking great and he is the fittest I have ever seen him," said Clarke.

"From the day he retired I've been trying to get him back in the team. I've asked him to come out of retirement a number of times.

"But there is a process that comes with coming out of retirement and he wouldn't be able to come out of retirement and walk straight back into the Australian team. He'd have to go and play some state games for Victoria.

"I've had the conversation with the Cricket Australia CEO a number of times over the past five years and the plan hasn't changed.

"I think he would be unbelievable if he decided to come out and play. And what an amazing mentor he would be for the team.'

In my opinion only, based purely on what I have seen (bear in mind I arrived in Oz as a 12 year old and had Australian cricket rammed down my throat!)
Best all rounder: Botham/Flintoff
Best Bowler (fast): McGrath
Best Bowler (spin): Warne
Best Batsmen: Sachin
Best Keeper (gloveman): Healy
Best Fielder: Rhodes
Captain: Steve Waugh
Hardest sherry: Steve Waugh
Favourite player: Steve Waugh
*prone to alterations should somebody suggest a player I've overlooked.

I'm sure there is. That's why they're called opinions.
& I have not seen as much of SA cricket as I have Australian, which is why I mentioned what has been rammed down my throat! I know there are plenty of players (e.g. Boucher) who have been reported to be fantastic, but just as in real life, I will make my own mind up about people as opposed to listening to hearsay.
As I have discussed with you before, Steve Waugh is just a personal favourite. Hardly a cabernet cricketer though.

he wasn't bad and wouldn't argue too loudly against where you have mentioned him.

You did day it was "prone to alterations" so I made some suggestions.

born in 1982....

added a category

Best all-rounder: Kallis
Best Bowler (fast): McGrath
Best Bowler (spin): Warne
Best Batsmen: Lara or Ponting
Best Keeper: (gloveman) Healy
Best Fielder: Symonds or Rhodes
Captain: Steve Waigh
Hardest Sherry: Graeme Smith
Matchwinner: Chris Cairns or Andy Flintoff
Favourite Player: Merv Hughes

Matchwinner is a guy I could consider that you throw the bat and/or ball too and they will win it for you in the pressure situations. Whilst having all the stats, Kallis is not the kind of player who took a series or single match 'by the throat'. Cairns and Flintoff were absolute geniuses in turning the game on their own.

agreed with the matchwinner.

symonds not in the same class as rhodes. Healey was good but plenty better than him.

You mentioned 3 batsmen out, but it was only 2/3? I could have sworn it was 3/2.

Mine: Lillee steaming in late in the day leaving the mighty West Indies 4/10 at stumps with Viv bowled last ball of day, then maybe Warnie's ball to Gatting.

Who's this Clark? I didnt think Stuart Clark played in that test but if he did, doubt he would have batted so high up the order.

Normally Bacon jumps on that one, always nice to have a change of scenery.
