Manchester United legend Paul Scholes offends Salford City player - by accidentally calling him a nurse

16:36, 24 April 2015 By Chris Slater

Writing in a newspaper column, Scholes referred to Chris Lynch as a nurse for the NHS, but the player reacted furiously and hit back on social media

A Salford City footballer has hit out at United legend Paul Scholes on Twitter over claims he has to leave the pitch early to go to work as a nurse.

Former Reds and England star Scholes bought non-league outfit Salford City last year with his ex Old Trafford teammates Ryan Giggs, Nick Butt, Gary and Phil Neville, report the Manchester Evening News.

And he used his weekly newspaper column to congratulate his team after they clinched promotion earlier this week.

However the piece caused a stir online over an anecdote about defender Chris Lynch.

In the column Scholes was quoted as saying: “You have to remember that all these players have full-time jobs, including the managers, and that really takes it out of them as the games come thick and fast.

“Our centre-half Chris Lynch, for example, is a nurse and at one midweek cup game I watched as he had to come off early in games to get to his night shift.

“I don’t know what Lynchy is like as a nurse but as a centre-half he has done very well for us.

“This lad would tackle a transit van.”

However Lynch immediately hit back on Twitter to deny working for the NHS.

He said: “A f****** nurse? He’s had me over big time.”

He tweeted a journalist at the paper: “A nurse pal?? Whos told you that? You couldn’t be any further away from my job title. I fill gas bottles whats your game?”

He also tweeted one of the club’s co-owners Phil Neville saying about Scholes: “Good job he’s not on Twitter as he’d be getting some stick.”

The piece was later changed to say that Lynch does indeed fill gas canisters for a living.

Chris, from Little Hulton told the M.E.N: “I’ve no idea where they got that from.

“It’s right that I have in the past had to come off early.

“But I work for a gas company.

“I just saw the funny side.

“I’ve already had loads of messages and no doubt I’ll get some stick off the lads tomorrow.

“But he did say I was a great defender.

“To get praise like that from one of my heroes I grew up watching is amazing.”

Salford were promoted to to the Northern Premier League after rivals Darlington 1883 could only draw 1-1 with Warrington on Tuesday night.

Several members of the Reds famous Class of 92’, who bought the club with businessman Peter Lim in March last year, tweeted their joy at the achievement with Ryan Giggs posing for a picture with the team as they celebrated.

The promotion party will continue when they face Ossett Town tomorrow.

Elsewhere in the column Scholes said: “Winning promotion to the Northern Premier League in our first season as owners has been a real thrill and we are very proud of our players and our joint-managers, Anthony Johnson and Bernard Morley.

“The pressure has been on the lads for the last 12 games or so as we have fought Darlington for the title, and they have come through well.”

Chris said: “It’s going to be an amazing day and hopefully we can top it off with a win.

“We’ve got a celebration afterwards and I’m really looking forward to it.

“If Scholesy is there I’ll have a little word with him.”

Nice to see former Football Stars putting something back into the game at a lower level. :D OM

That doesn't sound like an accident to me.
