League Round 17, September 3, 2017.
Match of the Day
THE 2017 League Champion Elizabeth Downs remain on track for an undefeated season after their 3-1 win over Brahma Lodge at Cockburn Green.
The Maroons travelled to Brahma looking to end a winless run of three games in the league against the 2016 Champions.
It took only three minutes for the Champions to take the lead when Jake Mottram picked up a cleared ball just outside the box before slotting his shot into the left-hand corner.
Lodge settled down and started to come into the game but both defences were solid as clear cut chances were scarce.
The game was all over on 43 minutes when Braiden Gundlach received the ball in the box and when his shot was parried Jordan Roche responded quickest to make it 2-0. If Lodge didn’t have enough of a mountain to climb they had two players sent off for dissent before play resumed.
After the break the Downs went three up when Matt Watson pounced on a miss placed pass to slide the ball past the outcoming keeper.
To Lodge’s credit the nine players on the park fought hard to limit the damage and on 90 minutes they grabbed a consolation goal when an Anthony Hartwell corner was headed home by Michael Mullen.
Downs coach Alan Mottram “We are happy to get the win against a team we haven’t beaten. We’ve had three games in eight days so we will make sure we prepare well for the cup”
PARAFIELD Gardens secured the League Runners up spot with a 3-0 win over Para Hills East at Para Hills Oval.
Gardens extended their unbeaten run to five games thanks to two goals from Callum Ebert and the experienced Simon Catanzaro.
The win moves Gardens five points clear of the 3rd placed Brahma Lodge with one game remaining while East will go into the last day level on points with the ninth placed Modbury Vista.
TWO fine free kicks have seen Elizabeth Vale run out 2-0 winners over a disappointing Ingle Farm at Walkleys Park.
The Vale were looking to make it three out of three having defeated Farm 4-1 in round 8 and 4-2 at Walkleys Park in the 3rd round of the Cup.
On 20 minutes the deadlock was broken when a powerful Michael Francis shot from the edge of the box gave Farm’s keeper no chance.
Not to be out done Vale youngster Jordan Kember curled in a fine effort from 25 yards on 70 minutes to secure all three points for the visitors.
Vale coach Tim Crawford “It’s a tough place to come so we are obviously happy to have won all three games against them this season.”
TEN Man Salisbury Inter showed great character to win 4-3 over Southern Knights in a hard-fought game at Southern Knights Oval.
The relegated Knights opened the scoring through Tom Foglia via the penalty spot and on 22 minutes that was cancelled out by a well hit free kick from Michael Centrone.
Inter were reduced to ten men soon after but took a 2-1 lead to the break when Marcus Marchioro converted from the penalty spot.
After the break, Nathan Pettit put in a bid for goal of the season when he blasted a looping missile from 30 yards to make it 3-1.
On 70 minutes the in form Foglia made it 3-2 before Inter regained their two-goal advantage when Marchioro again converted from the penalty spot.
Foglia gave the Knight fans some late hope when he scored his hat trick but time ran out as Inter returned north with all three points.
Inter coach Steve Cook “I thought it was a gutsy effort from the boys”.
MODBURY Vista have kept their survival hopes alive with a 4-2 win over Salisbury Florina at Underdown Park.
Vista flew out of the gates moving to a 3-0 lead within the first 15 minutes. Two goals from Robbie Williams and another from Russell Clayton providing the perfect start.
Ten minutes before the break Florina made it 3-1 when Jason Trimboli converted from the penalty spot and ten minutes after the break Trimboli again converted from the spot.
Vista nerves were settled when Williams secured his hat trick as they ran out deserved 4-2 winners.
Due to Modbury’s inferior goal difference (-11 behind Para Hills East) they head into the last day needing a better result than East to ensure their survival.

Re: Craig Laird's Sunday Premier Division Round Up
Jason Trimboli still has exquisite touch and vision - but has slowed down a bit due to father time catching up - still it was nice to see him play out there with the younger players
Re: Craig Laird's Sunday Premier Division Round Up
There's something you don't see very often. All away teams won!!!
Re: Craig Laird's Sunday Premier Division Round Up
Even when the Downs played them the big tromboli got the monkey off his back and finally scored against the Downs...He will always be a Downs Legend to all the supporters, has a bloody good resume...Maybe if Motts gives up the coaching caper the big fella can coach the Downs....Maybe. In saying all that he is still a spurs biff though..... :wink:churchill wrote:Jason Trimboli still has exquisite touch and vision - but has slowed down a bit due to father time catching up - still it was nice to see him play out there with the younger players

One thing that i picked up on though was a bit testiness between a few of the Florina players.
I guess bit of end of season frustration maybe..?
Re: Craig Laird's Sunday Premier Division Round Up
Picked up on that when we played them too. When you look at their results this year it was a good start but then injuries (?) to their midfielders and goal keeper seemed to start a downward spiral from about mid-season with some heavy loses. At least for all the hard working committee and players they will be safe for another year in Division 1 and have the summer to refresh and re-group for another crack

Then you've been sent off for 2 yellow cards and at least 2 offences.
You could make an argument if you got both yellows for dissent I suppose.

Correct!
Really poor discipline led to the sendings off - almost looked like they were trying to get themselves dismissed. From the side it looked like there were a couple of others lucky to get away with not being cautioned or sent off. It then appeared as if the linesman was put off his game and the steward called to deal with some supporters behind him. A regrettable 20 mins or so for a proud club like that. To their credit the 9 players rallied and produce a strong performance in the second half.

Hopefully the Brahma boys have lost a bit of interest and any interest they have left might be lost when they arrive at the cow paddock on Sunday !
With that said what I seen of Florina on Sunday I suggest that Easties are a big chance to get the points at home this week anyway.
Costly error playing Kelly as Vista's form in the last 8 weeks has been quite sound and worthy of staying up.

They def will. But on there day are good enough to get the points like any team in the league. The few players missing will definitely help vista and the pitch as well. If it is playable.. That and the points East were awarded from the Brahma game have made a difference. No kidding wrote:Vista need a bit of luck to pinch a point.chunky-monkey wrote:Simic and Foster I'm toldNo kidding wrote: Anyone know who the 2 Lodge players that were sent off were?

The SAASL should have a policy of granting clearance for any player to play for a new team before the player is allowed to play to stop this admin bundle. The unfortunate part is that Matt did not have a great influence on that particular game and he wasn't really required for that game having a natural midfielder player on the bench that could've played instead. No kidding wrote:Vista need a bit of luck to pinch a point.chunky-monkey wrote:Simic and Foster I'm toldNo kidding wrote: Anyone know who the 2 Lodge players that were sent off were?

It could be worse we could be in the collegiate league, apparently one team had a player that had been cleared by the FFA (the body that ultimately the collegiate league falls under) said player played a couple of games. The collegiate league then decided that the player couldn't be cleared to play and the team forfeited points.

Maybe the player or club should have checked with the Collegiate League before playing ?

I would suggest they probably need a win, as I think East will beat FlorinaNo kidding wrote:Vista need a bit of luck to pinch a point.chunky-monkey wrote:Simic and Foster I'm toldNo kidding wrote: Anyone know who the 2 Lodge players that were sent off were?
Hopefully the Brahma boys have lost a bit of interest and any interest they have left might be lost when they arrive at the cow paddock on Sunday !
With that said what I seen of Florina on Sunday I suggest that Easties are a big chance to get the points at home this week anyway.
Costly error playing Kelly as Vista's form in the last 8 weeks has been quite sound and worthy of staying up.
Good luck to them though, they have finished the season strongly and but for 'clerical errors' would have been safe

yes, just saw that, I assume the league table is wrong, as they have you above them, yet a they have a far better goal difference? Anyway good luck
