England relegated to Nations League B after grim defeat to Italy
Until this last game against Germany, England were in illustrious company
Only two nations were yet to score a single non-penalty goal in the 2022-23 UEFA Nations League.

Re: England pre- WC Squad
I don't coach, so I can't be sure, but it seems to me that nobody is actually taught how to defend in the modern game. I watched the West Ham v Wolves game and three times the Wolves defence let Jarrod Bowen come inside onto his left, have they never watched him play before, he can only kick with one foot? Same with the Spurs defence and Saka, surely with all the backroom support clubs have these days, someone can analyse the opposition and point these things out to defenders, it's really not brain surgery.

Doesn't change the fact that his defending is not at national level.Old Master wrote: ↑Wed Oct 05, 2022 5:41 pmHe scored a brilliant Free-Kick against Rangers though.

That is not important though, Maguire isn't even at Championship level.God is an Englishman wrote: ↑Wed Oct 05, 2022 6:25 pmDoesn't change the fact that his defending is not at national level.Old Master wrote: ↑Wed Oct 05, 2022 5:41 pmHe scored a brilliant Free-Kick against Rangers though.
He is off form this season, no doubt, he should be in the squad IMO, however I doubt he will be, and that's Gareth's choice. He is paid to manage what he thinks is best for the team.
As someone said, Klopp picks a team to win a game, Southgate picks a team not to lsoe - and that is the reason TAA is not suited to the England set up.

Re: England pre- WC Squad
Defensive skills at national level are very important and currently both Maguire and TAA are not up to the required level . IMO both Maguire and TAA should be omitted from the England WC squad . Given his lack of game time at MU the same argument could hold for Luke Shaw .Victor Meldrew wrote: ↑Wed Oct 05, 2022 8:20 pmThat is not important though, Maguire isn't even at Championship level.God is an Englishman wrote: ↑Wed Oct 05, 2022 6:25 pmDoesn't change the fact that his defending is not at national level.Old Master wrote: ↑Wed Oct 05, 2022 5:41 pmHe scored a brilliant Free-Kick against Rangers though.

Re: England pre- WC Squad
It depends how you play.
Last few seasons or so LFC have done ‘ok’ with TAA .
He can defend ok, he is off form though and is not the world’s best defender but he is good. All this he cant defend is typical modern day over reaction garbage
Or do you know better than Klopp and Neville etc?

Re: England pre- WC Squad
Re: TAA what you have to remember is, although he's defensively OK in the PL, most of the wingers and forwards he comes up against are not world class, they're only OK too, but when, or maybe if, we get to the pointy end of a World Cup, the standard will be high and solid defending will be required. I don't think he can do that and I don't think that England play in a way that will allow him to get high up the pitch and deliver the ball as he does for Liverpool, at least not on a regular basis.
Gareth does not like flair or luxury players, he wants solid, dependable types who'll run all day, not necessarily in the right places. He's impressed when a player mucks up a simple pass and gives it away to the opposition, then chases like mad to try and get the ball back. I'm impressed with the player who can play the simple pass perfectly every time and doesn't have to run around like a headless chook.
Given that we have James and Walker in the right back spot and Trippier able to cover them, I'd rather take an extra midfielder like Maddison than a suspect full back.

the World Cup final will most likley have mainy PL players in it.
i dont coach either, but only one manager actually thinks leaving TAA at home is the right thing - Gareth.
